Anacom proposes to the Government to reduce the loyalty term. It is “urgent” to take measures to protect consumers, says regulator

(in update)

Anacom, Portugal’s communications regulator, proposes to the Government the reduction of the loyalty period in telecommunications contracts to “promote lower prices”. João Cadete de Matos, president of this body, addressed this Wednesday the issue of the rise in the prices of services, which will weigh more heavily on the Portuguese portfolio.

The president of Anacom contextualized that, “in the competitive market, what would happen and what many operators are doing” would go through “consumer mobility for offers with lower prices.” However, in Portugal the scenario is different, says Cadete de Matos. “The loyalty period practiced, of 24 months, prevents this mobility.” In this sense, the regulator proposes that the maximum duration of the customer loyalty period be reduced 24 for six months.

Cadete de Matos regrets that the recommendation made by Anacom in October of last year regarding price maintenance has not been followed by the three main operators, holders of the largest market shares. “The only operator that we can say that met Anacom’s recommendation was the operator Nowo, which has a market share of between 2 and 3%, depending on the type and service.”

The three major telecommunications operators in the Portuguese market -Altice, Nos and Vodafone- have announced price increases, which can reach up to 7.8%. Only Nowo, which is in the process of being acquired by Vodafone, said it would not raise prices. the increases

The announced increase in the prices of these services has already received comments from the Ministry of Infrastructure, which is in charge of the communications area. In response to the Lusa agency, the Ministry of João Galamba guaranteed that it is monitoring these increases, explaining that it “requested information from Anacom, that is, on consumer rights in relation to current contracts, their eventual cancellation and on the information posted available to companies.
