Bosch/Braga invests 2 million euros in a geothermal plant that reduces 600 tons of CO2

Bosch installed a geothermal plant in its industrial complex in Braga, which allows it to reduce annual carbon emissions by about 600 tons, as announced this Monday.

In a sentence, Bosch states that this new decarbonization project was developed and implemented between 2022 and 2023, having materialized through the installation of a geothermal heat pump system.

This system consists of a combination of a heat pump and 140 geothermal probes taken to a depth of 133 meters.

According to Bosch, it is “one of the largest geothermal plants in mainland Portugal.”

“Through geothermal probes and a water-based condensation heat pump, this system has the ability to provide thermal energy for cooling or heating in a more efficient and economical way than any other conventional system,” he explains.

The investment amounted to two million euros and was financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

“The installation of the geothermal system is part of the company’s broad energy transition plan, which has as one of its main objectives, already achieved, the elimination of the use of natural gas as a primary energy source,” the statement adds.

This plan includes a set of additional measures that, combined, are equivalent to a saving of approximately 5,740 MWh of natural gas, which corresponds to an annual reduction in carbon emissions of 1,160 tons.

Previously, Bosch had already invested, in Braga, in the installation of 5,934 photovoltaic modules capable of generating 4GWh of electrical energy per year, entirely for self-consumption.

This production corresponds to around 10% of the energy needed in that industrial complex.

The goal is to reach an annual production capacity of 12GWh by 2027, which will increase the complex’s energy resilience to 30% of needs.
