Madeira advances with 128 beds for continued mental health care

On Tuesday, the Government of Madeira signed contracts with two private institutions for the creation of 128 spaces within the Integrated Network for Continuous Mental Health Care, for a total of five million euros, within the framework of the PRR.

“It is an important moment in terms of the Regional Health Service and with a direct connection to the Recovery and Resilience Program [PRR]”said the regional secretary of Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, indicating that in general 54 million euros will be invested in the long-term care network until 2026.

The president was speaking at the signing ceremony of contracts relating to projects of the Integrated Network of Continuous Care in Mental Health, one with the São João de Deus Health Centre and another with the Câmara Pestana Health Centre, in the main hall of the Regional Government, in Funchal.

The projects aim to Creation of 128 beds on three levels — maximum support residences, residences for training in autonomy and autonomous residences, 81 of which are managed by the Casa de Saúde São João de Deus and 47 by the Casa de Saúde Câmara Pestana, two reference institutions in the field of mental health in the archipelago.

“These three situations correspond to this phase of evolution towards deinstitutionalization, to prepare the reintegration of citizens with a certain vulnerability,” explained Pedro Ramos.

Some of the new spaces will be created alongside institutionsLocated in Funchal, and others will be built from scratch in several parishes of the capital of Madeira.

The regional secretary clarified that, in total, the PRR channels 54 million euros only to the Integrated Network of Continuous Care of the Autonomous Region of Madeirawith a view to creating 1,080 beds, 730 general and 337 in the mental health area, including the 128 presented today.

“All of this must be created by 2026,” said Pedro Ramos, acknowledging, however, that there are “some difficulties” at the company level due to “tight deadlines.”
