  • The Government promises speed if the Chambers request an extension of video surveillance

The Secretary of State for Interior Administration, Telmo Correia, defended the reinforcement of the network of video surveillance cameras, considering that it is an “essential” instrument, since it allows the authorities to reinforce their work. But he emphasizes that a “balance” is necessary with “respect for individual rights.” The decision to expand the network, he says, must come from the PSP and the municipalities, but the Government promises speed in the process if that request is made.

On Sunday, the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, committed at the PSD Congress to reinforce “the proximity and visibility of the police on the street” and “increase video surveillance systems”. Montenegro said it will do so with multi-force teams comprising PJ, PSP, GNR, ASAE, Working Conditions Authority and Tax Authority to “relentlessly combat violent crime, drug trafficking and illegal immigration.”

Telmo Correia emphasizes this Monday that it is necessary “to have closer and more visible police surveillance” and reaffirms the intention to reinforce video surveillance.

“It is a complex process, it requires many analyzes by the National Data Protection Commission, the PSP, and we want more video surveillance with this balance: security but respect for individual rights,” he stated.

This system “does not solve everything but it is an essential instrument.” “With 40 cameras, for example, two police officers now have 40 more eyes on the street. It multiplies the capacity by replacing the essential element that is the human being,” he adds.

Regarding a possible expansion of the video surveillance network in Porto, where he is attending a conference on security, he highlights that the initiative “must come from the municipalities, in coordination with the PSP.” But he adds: “If the municipality of Porto, together with the PSP, understands that there must be expansion, we will have to start a new process and on our part everything possible to ensure it is resolved as quickly as possible“.

The Government recently authorized the Porto City Council to proceed with the installation of video surveillance cameras in the city.
