The young workers of Lisbon delivered a letter to the Government this Thursday asking for a “general increase in salaries”, the end of precariousness, “the reduction and regulation of the working day” and the reinforcement of public services.
These demands are contained in the letter delivered this Thursday by Interjovem, an organization of young workers of the CGTP, to the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security, in which the young workers of the capital demand “an alternative policy for Portugal, based on the right to work and work with rights, based on the valuation of workers and young people, based on the achievements, values and April project.”
In the letter and in four points, Interjovem Lisboa thus defends a general increase in wages of at least 15%, up to a minimum of 150 euros, as well as an increase in the national minimum wage from the current 820 euros to 1,000 eurosas indicated in the CGTP’s list of demands, “in order to safeguard the purchasing power of young people” and “guarantee the conditions to build a life with dignity and quality.”
Let us remember that the national minimum wage will increase to 870 euros from January 2025.
“Precariousness is an attack on the constitutional right to work with rights and security in employment, it is a socioeconomic scourge with serious impacts on the lives of young people,” the young workers of Lisbon also point out, adding that it contributes “to the postponement of decisions.” important aspects of life, conditions the achievement of independence and emancipation of young workers and also serves as a barrier to the achievement of professional objectives.
In this context, they demand “the fight against all forms of precarious employment, the regularization of precarious labor relations of workers who occupy permanent jobs in all sectors and the application of the public appointment bonus in the Public Administration”, as well as the “end of abuse and rotation in internships, end of the use of Labor Insertion Contracts or similar measures” to replace jobs in the public service.
Among the various demands, they also ask for an “inspection system that guarantees continuous action against the abusive use of fixed-term contracts and all illegal forms of contracting, and the coordination and joint and permanent intervention of labor inspections, of social security and Treasury.” Authority, with clear guidelines for the protection of workers and respect for their rights,” adds the document, which was put to a vote this Thursday during the Interjovem Lisbon district conference.
Regarding working hours, Interjovem Lisboa defends the “institution of a maximum normal working day of 35 hours per week for all workers without reduction in remuneration”, the “revocation of all adaptability regimes, time banks and concentrated working hours provided for in the Labor Code”, as well as the limitation of night work, shift work and continuous work regimes.
Regarding the defense and reinforcement of public services and social functions of the State, they defend investment in the National Health Service (SNS), “valuing the salaries and careers of its professionals, providing them with the material and human resources to respond.” to the needs of the populations and users”, as well as valuing “free, democratic and quality” public schools, valuing teachers, non-teaching staff and researchers.
They also ask that the public system of Universal and Solidarity Social Security be guaranteed, as a social function of the State, as well as the “definition of policies and public investment that reduce rental costs and interests in access to housing,” in to guarantee young people’s access to housing.
