CLAIM: Bill Nye, the “Scientist”, said in a recent tweet that the last slaves were not formally freed until June 19, 1865, or the “June number”.
DECISION: MALI. The last slaves were freed after the enactment of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery and other forms of forced labor in the United States. Confirmation took place on December 6, 1865.
President Abraham Lincoln freed Confederate slaves with his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The proclamation, however, did not apply to slaves across state lines that Lincoln did not want to isolate at the height of the Civil War.

“June” – June 19, 1865 – commemorates the day slaves were freed in Texas by order of Union Army General Gordon Granger. President Joe Biden has declared the day to begin in 2021 a federal holiday.
Nye did not update or delete his tweet Monday afternoon, despite numerous replies pointing to his gross mistake.

Nye is a vocal climate change activist who uses her multiple platforms to raise the alarm about global warming. In its 2019 appearance on HBO Last Week Tonight With John Oliver“The planet is on fire!” he shouted, cursing about climate change.
