Broadway to stop forced masking as stars test positive for coronavirus

The Broadway League said it will end mandatory mask wearing in theaters and face masks will become optional on July 1 as stars test positive for the Chinese coronavirus. The decision also came after Broadway star Patty LuPone was seen shouting at the audience without wearing a mask.

“Owners and operators of all 41 Broadway theaters in New York City will maintain mask-wearing requirements at all Broadway theaters through June 30 and will adopt an optional mask-wearing policy in July,” the Broadway League said.

Audiences are still encouraged to wear masks in theaters.

The Broadway League added that “masquerade protocols will be reviewed monthly for August and beyond” and will be announced in mid-July.

Despite the mandatory wearing of masks, Broadway stars continue to test positive for the Chinese coronavirus.
