ATLANTA (AP) – Rapper Ludacris’ manager has been charged with murder in connection with a June attack in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Police Department said Chaka Zulu, whose real name is Ahmed Obafemi, surrendered on Tuesday. Atlanta news sources reported that he was released on bail the same day. Police also said they received an arrest warrant accusing him of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm at the time of the crime, and simple assault.
Gabe Banks, longtime music director’s attorney, issued a statement expressing disappointment with the decision to bring charges. Banks said the evidence clearly showed that the Zulu, who was injured in the incident, was defending himself when he was attacked by at least four people in the June incident.
Zulu was among three people shot in a shootout at a Buckhead parking lot on June 26. One person died.
In a statement, Banks said the Zulu was defending himself with a gun he was licensed to carry.
“Bay also didn’t disappear. Zulu someone died, but if Mr. Zulu himself was legally killed that night, Mr. Zulu,” it said.
Artez Benton, 23, whom his family described as ambitious, hardworking and devoted to his family, was killed in a gun attack in June. “He did everything right,” his father, Artis Benton, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after the shoot. “I didn’t think this was the end of him.”
