Jazz returns to the garden of the Lisbon Goethe Institute in July

The Jazz im Goethe-Garten (JiGG) festival returns in July to the gardens of the German institute in Lisbon, after two years of interruption due to the covid-19 pandemic, “to celebrate summer with European jazz,” the organization announced.

The 16th edition of JiGG takes place between July 6 and 15 and celebrates, in addition to its return, “the European transnational spirit that, in this edition, is especially evident in the closing concert of the festival, with a line-up that perfectly combines the friendship between Portugal and Germany”, reads a statement released by the organization.

The program includes “five jazz proposals made in Europe and that continue to stand out for their originality in relation to canonical forms of expression.”

The opening concert, on July 6, will be performed by the Garuda Trio, a new association of Amsterdam-based saxophonist Hugo Costa, bassist Hernâni Faustino and drummer João Valinho.

The following day, July 7, the Swiss Schellertollermeier (Andi Schnellmann on electric bass, Manuel Troller on electric guitar and David Meier on percussion) will perform, “with hypnotic and also hypnotizing music that will turn the gardens of the Goethe-Institut into an authentic outdoor spa”.

On July 13, the Austrian clarinet quartet Woody Black 4 will perform, made up of Daniel Moser, Leonhard Skorupa, Stephan Dickbauer and Oscar Antoli, and which combines “several musical universes that approach and distance themselves from the essence of jazz”.

A concert by the Italian Weird Box trio is scheduled for July 14, made up of Francesco Bearzatti on tenor sax and clarinet, Bruno Angelini on piano, electric piano and keyboards, and Nicolas Larmignat on drums. This project presents “urban music, more electronic and closer to the new generations”.

The closing concert is given by a group from Germany, “but with a very Portuguese touch”. On stage will be the Portuguese bassist Carlos Bica, who lives in Berlin, the German saxophonist Daniel Erdmann and the DJ Illvibe (Vincent von Schlippenbach), “creating a true spirit of celebration of the friendship between Germany and Portugal, in an atmosphere of amazing jazz ”.

JiGG concerts always start at 19:00.
