The film “Bob Cuspe — Nós Não Gostomos de Gente”, by Brazilian director César Cabral, received the trophy for best animated feature film at the Quirino Awards, which recognize animated cinema in the Ibero-American space.
In addition to “Bob Cuspe – Nós Não Seguimos de Gente” were nominated in the same category “Valentina”, a Spanish-Portuguese co-production by the Spanish artist Chelo Loureiro, who won the Goya for Best Animated Film this year, as well as “Ainbo the Amazon Warrior”, by José Zelada and Richard Claus, a co-production between Peru and the Netherlands, and the Brazilian film “Meu tio José”, by Ducca Rios.
“Bob Cuspe – We don’t like people” is a post-apocalyptic road-movie starring a character from Brazil’s underground culture in the 1980s, created by cartoonist Angeli, after whom the film is named .
The feature film also won the award for Best Sound and Best Original Soundtrack for an Ibero-American Animated Film.
At the awards ceremony, held on Saturday at the Leal Theater in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, “Bestia”, directed by Hugo Covarrubias, won the award for Best Animated Short Film.
The ‘short’ is based on the story of a secret police agent during the military dictatorship in Chile, and is inspired by real events.

The winners were chosen by a jury made up of Sebastian Debertin (KiKA, Germany), Magdiela Hermida Duhamel (LatinX in Animation, United States), Zofia Jaroszuk (Animoon, Poland), Kenneth Ladekjær (Sun Creature Studio, Denmark) and Hernán La Greca. (Creative and Content Director, United States).
In the fifth edition of the awards, 19 works from 12 countries competed in nine categories: feature films, series, short films, school ‘shorts’, productions on demand, video game animation, sound design and original music, visual development and animation design.
The Quirino Awards were created in 2018 to recognize the production of those who work in Ibero-American animated cinema, on both sides of the Atlantic.
More than 20 countries, including Portugal, participated in the creation of these awards, named after the Italian-Argentine director Quirino Cristiani.
