“Peaky Blinders”: the goodbye to the Shelbys never seems definitive (and that is a problem)

It is not easy to digest this ending of “Peaky Blinders”, available on Netflix. The expectations were high, the wait too long, almost as if we had been dreaming for a long time with a perfect menu in our heads, which made us salivate just by imagining it. On paper, the description of the dishes (or all six episodes, in this case) seemed like the perfect match, but since they turned up and fell short of expectations, we pinned all our hopes on the next one. Everything ended without any element that took our breath away, leaving only the feeling of having been cheated.

Looking back, I begin to doubt my judgment. After all, why do I still say that “Peaky Blinders” is one of the best series in recent years? Am I not conditioned by the spectacularly thunderous beginning of a gang of neighbors, a highly intelligent, ambitious and charming man and a doomed love affair at its center? I’m afraid if you think about it too much, you’ll realize that the show has lost its magic as the Shelby empire has grown and its influence has spread further and further, far beyond Birmingham’s Small Heath neighborhood. , until you reach the parliament in London. There are several recurring elements in each season: at one point, the Peaky Blinders seem to be backed against the wall, with no way to turn the situation around, which ends up happening, of course, in the most unbelievable and unexpected way. . Or will it be nonsense? Thomas Shelby also promises on several occasions that “this will be the last blow, the last effort of the family” before any bucolic alternative of life that only includes legal businesses. Obviously that never happens.
