Bassist Carlos Bica makes his debut, on Saturday, in Almada, in an unprecedented quartet formation, with accordionist João Barradas, trumpeter Gonçalo Marques and drummer Samuel Rohrer, announced the promoter of the concert.
The bassist is usually identified with the Blue Trio, which he forms with guitarist Frank Möbus and drummer Jim Black, with whom he began his discography in 1996 with the album “Azul”.
In Almada, on Friday, at 9:30 p.m., at the Osvaldo Azinheira Auditorium of the Almadense Academy, Bica and his partners present new compositions in this format.
Carlos Bica is one of the names of national jazz with the greatest projection abroad. He studied double bass at the Academia dos Amateurs de Música and, later, at the Superior School of Music in Würzburg, Germany. He was part of the Lisbon Chamber Orchestra and several German chamber orchestras, such as the Bach Kammerorchester and the Wernecker Kammerorchester.
Carlos Bica’s first album dates back to 1986, “Conversas”, the third album by Maria João, a member of the singer’s quintet, of which she was a member and with whom she played for years.
Interpreter and composer of improvised music, Carlos Bica has also worked with Carlos do Carmo, José Mário Branco, Camané, Janita Salomé, Pedro Caldeira Cabral, Cristina Branco, as well as having collaborated with musicians such as Ray Anderson, Kenny Wheeler, Aki Takase, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Zorn, Lee Konitz, Mário Laginha, Mathias Schubert, Claudio Puntin, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Gebhard Ullmann, Paolo Fresu, David Friedman, Ulrike Haage, Alexander von Schlippenbach, John Ruocco, Daniel Erdmann and DJ Illvibe, among others .
João Barradas, one of Bica’s partners in this project, has been divided between traditional European classical music, jazz and improvised music. Winner of some international competitions, such as the World Accordion Trophy, twice, the Castelfidardo International Competition and the Okud Istra International Competition, as a soloist he has performed at the Het Concertgebouw, in Amsterdam, at the Wiener Konzerthaus, in Vienna, at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg , in Hamburg, among other spaces, such as the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, and the Casa da Música, in Porto.
The musician has been chosen by several composers who have written works for him that he has premiered.
In 2016, his first album “Directions” was released, with production by saxiphonist Greg Osby, named “one of the best albums of the year” by Downbeat magazine.
The accordionist was part of the group of musicians ECHO Rising Star of the European Concert Hall Organisation, in the 2019/2020 season.
Barradas is currently studying a Master’s Degree in Music Teaching (Jazz variant) at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.
Gonçalo Marques, the trumpeter of the quartet, studied at the Hot Clube de Portugal school with João Moreira. In 2001 he represented the Escola do Hot in an international meeting of jazz schools, organized by the International Association of Jazz Schools, at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, United States, and was awarded a scholarship at this university. He performs regularly with the Hot Club orchestra and plays with his own groups.
Marques has played with Demian Cabaud, Bruno Pedroso, André Sousa Machado, André Fernandes, Bernardo Moreira, Jeff Williams, Bill McHenry, Jacob Sacks, Guillermo Klein, André Matos, Masa Kamaguchi, Bruno Santos, John O’Ghallager, Marcos Cavaleiro, among others. others. others.
In 2016 he created the Robalo record label with bassist Demian Cabaud and, in 2018, he organized his first festival, already with five editions, the Robalo Festival, whose last edition was this month, in Lisbon.
Gonçalo Marques is a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa and director of the Escola do Hot Clube.
He has worked in the field of theater and dance, creating his own compositions.
His discography includes “Da vida e da morte dos animais” (2010), “Cabeça de Nuvem only tem Coração” and “Canção do Homem Simples”, being “Linhas” his most recent album.
The German Roher lives in Berlin since 2003, he started with improvised acoustic music and then experimented with electronic music.
