Japanese scientists launch an experiment to generate electricity from snow

Japanese scientists are testing a new technology for generating electricity from snow. This was reported by Nikkei Asia.

The experiment, launched in the city of Aomori, will run from December 2022 to spring 2023. The scientists will use special turbines that will be placed in a container such as a swimming pool that is regularly filled with snow. There will be a temperature difference between the air warmed by the sun and the cold inside the pool. This will cause a convection current to appear inside the turbine, which will make it spin and generate electricity.

The development is designed to help combat the energy crisis, as the generation of “snow” electricity is much more energy efficient and has less impact on the environment. A special snow power plant for the experiment was created by the Forte company in cooperation with the Tokyo University of Electrical and Electronic Communications.
