In the second season of the series “The White Lotus” (which ended this week and is available on HBO Max) there is a scene in which another older and iconic scene is recreated. Both have a similar idea at their core. In the same square, located in Noto, Italy, a woman walks facing the invasive male gaze. Harper, the character played by Aubrey Plaza, takes a walk that recreates the same walk as Claudia, in Michelangelo Antonioni’s film, “L’Avventura” (1960), so famously played by the Italian actress Monica Vitti, who died at the beginning of this year. It is a simple tribute to the film by the legendary Italian director, which focuses on the tense and tempestuous relationship between men and women, which still resonates in the same way today.
By the way remake shotseries creator Mike White told the Variety, that it was cinematographer Xavier Grobet’s idea to film this homage, as the production was located in the same location where Antonioni produced the original scene. Between the two scenes, White dissected the similarities: “’L’Avventura’ is as much about the desperate search for the meaning of life as it is about the idea of a lost woman searching for herself.
