Scientists discovered 1 million new galaxies in less than two weeks

The CSIRO telescope in Australia made headlines around the world after scanning the entire southern sky in just 300 hours and discovering 3 million never-before-seen galaxies.

Representatives of Australia’s national scientific organization announced a unique scientific breakthrough. Based on the data received, experts created a new atlas of the universe, and up to 1 million of these galaxies were previously unknown to astronomers.

The Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) project used 36 radio satellite dishes working together to produce high-resolution images of the universe.

The final 903 images used to create the new atlas consist of 70 billion pixels and 26 TB of data processed by the Pawsey Supercomputing Center’s Galaxy supercomputer.
