The reason for the appearance of black spots in the famous drawings of Leonardo da Vinci has been revealed

Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Codex Atlanticus has been the subject of research and restoration for decades. The latest study, led by scientists from the Milan Polytechnic Institute, provided a new look at the mysterious blackheads found on one of his skins.

According to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, blackheads were caused by nanoparticles of mercury sulfide, also known as metacinnabar, found in the skin’s protective paper. The study also confirmed the presence of starch and vinyl adhesive in the affected areas, which was most likely applied during restoration about 50 years ago.

The researchers collected the pieces of paper with the most intense darkening on the skin and analyzed them to learn more about the formation of the spots. They discovered that a starch adhesive mixture was applied with a brush to specific areas of the skin to strengthen its adhesion to the mat. The adhesive mixture contained a mercury-based salt that may have been added to prevent mold growth.

The study also revealed the unique microbiome of each Codex Atlanticus dye, along with many of the bacteria commonly found in the human microbiome. This suggests that they may have gotten into the drawings during the restoration, although it is unknown whether they came from the artist himself. The Codex Atlanticus is a collection of Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings and observations, including his prediction of the possibility of a telescope.
