SeixalJazz from October 10th to 19th with Vijay Iyer and Kurt Rosenwinkel

The SeixalJazz International Festival returns from 10 to 19 October, with concerts by international jazz names such as Vijay Iyer and Kurt Rosenwinkel and Portuguese projects taking place at the Municipal Auditorium and the SeixalJazz Clube.

According to Seixal City Council, the festival’s organizer, the 2024 program includes two North American jazz projects: on the one hand, pianist Vijay Iyer and, on the other, Kurt Rosenwinkel, who will bring the project “The Next Step”.

With them, musicians such as double bassist Linda May Han Oh, double bassist Ben Street and drummer Jeff Ballard will travel to Seixal, in the district of Setúbal.

Closing the festival, and as in previous years, is a young musician, instrumentalist and composer, considered one of the musicians who will define the future of jazz, the vibraphonist Joel Ross.

As for the participation of Portuguese musicians, according to the municipality, and also on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium of Foca, which brings together several renowned musicians from different generations, bringing different approaches and sounds.

The organization also highlights two national jazz projects: saxophonist Rodrigo Amado, with The Attic alongside Eve Risser, and Trespass Triothe result of collaboration between Norwegian and Swedish musicians and featuring Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva.

In addition to the concerts on the main stage of the Municipal Auditorium, concerts are also held at the SeixalJazz Clube, at the Sociedade Filarmónica Democrática Timbre Seixalense.

In this second space, entry is free and the atmosphere of a jazz club is recreated, with an informal atmosphere, and whose programming favors the presentation of national groups and projects based on improvised music and ‘free jazz’.

The programme is complementary to that presented at the Seixal Cultural Forum’s Municipal Auditorium, seeking to reach a wider audience and, at the same time, promote the work of Portuguese musicians, placing special emphasis on emerging projects.

With two sessions at 11pm and midnight, Clara Lacerda Quintet, Francisco Nogueira Quintet, Eunice Barbosa Quartet, Zé Cruz Quintet, Duarte Ventura Quintet and TAC will take the stage.

Tickets are on sale on the BOL network and at the Seixal Cultural Forum box office.

Tickets for each show cost 12 euros, with a 25% discount for young people up to 25 years old, residents, retirees and employees of the Seixal town hall.

Tickets for all concerts cost 60 euros.

In the mid-1990s, the Seixal City Council decided to invest in an initiative that would place the municipality on the cultural route of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, and which in the medium term could become a reference point in the country.

Following contact with musician and producer Paulo Gil, who passed away in May 2022, the idea of ​​producing a jazz festival unlike anything that had been done in Portugal until then was proposed.

These were the first steps of SeixalJazz, which in 2021 celebrated 25 years of existence.
