DGArtes. Curators chosen for the Portuguese representation competition at the Venice Architecture Biennale

The three teams invited to submit proposals to the competition to choose the Official Representation of Portugal at the XIX International Architecture Exhibition – Venice Biennale, in 2025, have already been chosen, the General Directorate of the Arts (DGArtes) announced this Friday.

“For this limited competition, three teams were invited to submit a proposal: ‘What are we doing’ by Joana Pestana Lages, Paulo Moreira and Gonçalo Folgado; ‘Paradise,

‘ by Paula Melâneo, Pedro Bandeira, Luca Martinucci, Catarina Raposo and Nuno Cera; ‘Recover, Repair, Regenerate: Towards a constellation of protocols’ by António Pedro Faria, João Francisco Sousa, Miguel Teodoro, Nádia Santos and Tiago Ascensão,” says DGArtes, in a statement released this Friday.

Starting this year, the selection process for the Portuguese representation at the Venice Architecture Biennale began to include, in a first phase, “a ‘call for expressions of interest’, which will allow all those who wish to participate to submit applications. ”.

“Participation is open to architects and professionals linked to the disciplinary area of architecture.“, announced in July the Ministry of Culture.

The commission that evaluated the applications received in the ‘call for expressions of interest’ was made up of experts Ana Jara, Ana Vaz Milheiro, Diogo Passarinho, Inês Lobo and Luís Santiago Baptista.

The three candidates were selected based on the “quality and coherence of the curatorial proposal, the response to the theme launched by the general curator of the Venice Biennale 2025 [‘Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Coletivo’]the curriculum vitae of the candidate(s), and the appropriation of the pavilion space.”

The results announced this Friday by the DGArtes are provisional, with a hearing period now opening for interested parties.

The limited competition to choose the Official Portuguese Representation at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – Venice Biennale, endowed with 425 thousand euros, is one of the eight competitions of the DGArtes 2024 Project Support Program that should open until the end of the year.

The eight competitions, in all areas and artistic fields, have a budget of 14,225 million euros.

Apparently, this value represents an increase with respect to the endowment of the 2023 Project Support Program, which will be implemented this year, which had a endowment of 13,350 million euros. However, last year only six contests were opened.

The 19th International Architecture Exhibition – Venice Biennale will take place from May 10 to November 23, 2025.

In the next edition of the Architecture Biennale, and for three years, the official pavilion of Portugal will be installed at the Fondaco Marcello, next to the Grand Canal.

“After ending the lease contract with the previous space, the Palazzo Franchetti, the Ministry of Culture understood that it was necessary to find a new space that would guarantee better exhibition conditions,” the authority states in a statement released in July, adding that the new, with an area of 370 square meters and with “two open and spacious spaces on a single ground floor”, “it is located in the center, next to the Grand Canal”.

Until the end of this month, the Palazzo Franchetti hosts the Portuguese Pavilion at the 60th Venice Art Biennale, where the “Greenhouse” project by curators and artists Mónica de Miranda, Sónia Vaz Borges and Vânia Gala is on display.

The “Fertile Futures” project, curated by Andreia García, from Architectural Affairs, represented Portugal at the Venice Architecture Biennale between May 20 and November 26, 2023, under the theme “The laboratory of the future”.
