Mozambique will try this Thursday to replace Kenya in the vacancy of the African representative for a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN).
The Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation expressed confidence in the election of her country to the UN Security Council, valuing that experience in the fight against terrorism will be an “advantage” in your favor.
The official told Lusa that “friendly countries” have expressed their intention to vote for Mozambique, including the five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America – who offered her “training and practical support”. .
Five Member States (Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland) compete for the available seats. Mozambique and Switzerland are among the 62 UN member states, 31.9% of the total membership, that have never been part of the Council.
This year, Mozambique competes indisputably for the only seat available for the African group.
Verónica Macamo considered that her country’s experience in the fight against terrorism, specifically in Cabo Delgado, is in favor of her country. The Mozambican province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorized since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.
Among the issues that it intends to highlight in the event of elections, in addition to terrorism, Mozambique also highlighted guarantees of peace and security, maritime piracy, trafficking in people, drugs and human organs, use of technologies to empower countries and gender issues.
“We are also concerned about climate change. We, as the Council of Nations, have to find more effective ways to combat climate change, especially its effects. But we also have to look at biodiversity as a very important element to keep our world habitable”, defended Macamo.
The UN Security Council is made up of 15 members, five permanent and 10 non-permanent.
The election will take place at the UN headquarters in New York.
