PR honors the former president of the Israeli Community of Lisbon Joshua Ruah

The President of the Republic awarded this Thursday the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique to Dr. Joshua Ruah, who was president of the Israeli Community of Lisbon.

According to a note published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, the award ceremony was held in the afternoon at the Palacio de Belém.

The Order of Infante D. Henrique aims to distinguish those who have provided relevant services to Portugalin the country and abroad, as well as services in the expansion of Portuguese culture or to get to know Portugal, its history and its values, according to the Belém website.

Joshua Ruah was born in 1940 in Lisbon, in the midst of World War II..

Son of the doctor Moisés Ruah, renowned surgeon in the field of Urology and grandson of the famous photographer Joshua Benoliel, he entered the Faculty of Medicine in 1959 and practiced for more than fifty years as a surgeon and in the direction and head of hospital services. .

He presided over the Israeli Community of Lisbon for 23 years and, as such, met with personalities such as Pope John Paul II and, on two occasions, with Yasser Arafat.
