“Being president is a goal that many point out to me”

On the opening day of the 40th Congress of the PSD, the former leader and political commentator, Luís Marques Mendes, was the guest of the program celebrating the three years of Vichyssoise, on Rádio Observador. In an interview recorded before the outbreak of an internal crisis in the Government of António Costa, Marques Mendes anticipated that Luís Montenegro will reach the 2026 legislative elections and has the chance of winning against a candidate who will not be Costa and against a PS worn out by more than 10 years in power.

Marques Mendes tried to avoid talking about the presidential elections, because he considers them extemporaneous, but he went there saying that many approach him and point out that objective and that he is “sensitized.” But he soon adds that, right now, it’s not in his “forecasts, ambitions or purposes.” As for the idea of Paulo Portas as a presidential candidate, Mendess refuses to comment on anything “abstract.”
