The Canadian military is aiming to significantly relax its dress code, allowing soldiers to get tattoos on their faces, as well as grow their hair to any length and dye it any color.
Canada’s Department of National Defense (DND) announced that dress codes for Canadian Forces will be relaxed significantly this September, complaining that the existing rules are decades old.
“As a result, the Canadian Forces Dress Code is about 50 years old, so it’s too late to rethink policy as a whole,” the DND said in a statement on the Canadian government’s website. Said.
“Face tattoos are allowed as long as the rules set out in Part 2 – Appearance are followed,” the DND said, listing prohibited tattoos that express hatred, violence, discrimination or harassment. All hair colors are also allowed, including unnatural colors like pink and blue, but the DND warns that these colors should not interfere with job duties: “For example, bright colors of hair can have a negative impact on performance during field operations or training. Leaders are encouraged to talk to their members to find a simple, appropriate accessory to cover their hair, such as a scarf.”
“The uniform does not equate to discipline or operational efficiency, as the color or length of your hair does not determine your dedication or professional ability,” said Canadian General Wayne Eyre, Chief of the Defense Staff of Canada. go on Twitter this week.
“Some will see this development and others may see it as inappropriate,” he admitted.
The change came as the Canadian military struggled to recruit new recruits, according to a March CBC report, which said the Canadian military did not have nearly 7,600 full-strength soldiers and was having serious problems recruiting women.
The British government, which is also struggling with recruitment, announced that it plans to add more women to its armed forces. Last December, the Department of Defense (MoD) announced plans to double the number of female soldiers in the armed forces by 2030.
