On June 10, one of the walls of the MAAT received a reinterpretation of the iconic mural painted by the Democratic Movement of Plastic Artists 48 years earlier. The purpose of the reinterpretation was to recover what was destroyed by the force of a fire in 1981, but just over a month later it was shattered.
The work with the face of Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho (who died on July 25 of last year) was vandalized this morning. In the face of Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho there is now a cross and under it was written “18 deaths”.
To the Observer, the MAAT clarifies that no complaint will be filed with the authorities for vandalism, but a solution is already being agreed with the author of the work.
The vandalism will not be erased, but the author will carry out a new intervention during the next week,” says an official museum source.
For now, at least for the next weekend, it will remain as it is. “Also because of what the work represents and the ideal behind it, the vandalism will not be erased,” adds the same source.
The type of intervention is not yet defined, the work that is also part of the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25 should be “finished” again at the end of next week.
