Post Uwalde: Mississippi State Board of Education Opens Doors to Armed School Staff

Last week, the Mississippi Board of Education voted to end a 30-year policy banning teachers and school personnel from carrying guns on K-12 campuses to protect the classroom.

FOX News reported on Tuesday: “Following the murders at Robb Uwalde Elementary School, the July 4th parade near Chicago and the mall in Indiana, last week the Mississippi Board of Education passed a local policy in 1990 prohibiting anyone except law enforcement from carrying a gun. Voted to update. firearms. public school campuses.

The Mississippi Free Press spoke to Brian McGarty, director of school safety and order for the Mississippi Department of Education, and explained that this move brings schools into compliance with an advanced abrasion law passed more than a decade ago.

McGarty argued that the prohibition of K-12 “to possess any form of handgun, firearm, or weapon except by duly authorized law enforcement officers on school buildings or school events” is in violation of the expanded carry law.

“We’ve been following state law that has been in effect for the past 11 years,” he said.

Erin Meyer, General Counsel at the Mississippi Department of Education, said:

“This rule currently conflicts with the Mississippi Extended Carry Act, so the Extended Carry Act allows suitably certified persons to carry firearms in certain areas listed in the statute,” he said. “This includes primary and secondary schools, so our policy is currently against it. State council policy cannot prohibit what the law permits.”

The policy change does not mean that teachers can start carrying guns to school for classroom protection. Instead, the change means that each school district will set the rules for its own schools.

Mississippi is one of 25 constitutional states in the United States.
