The PCP considers Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan a “provocation” and asks the Portuguese government to disassociate itself from this action

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) condemned what it considers the “provocation mounted by the US with the departure of Nancy Pelosi” to the island of Taiwan, carried out this Tuesday after several days of speculation.

“[A visita] It is part of the strategy of increasing the confrontation of imperialism against the People’s Republic of China, instrumentalize Taiwan and promote separatism to challenge the ‘one China principle””, reads the note issued by the PCP.

For the communists, “the recent actions of imperialism” in Taiwan and this visit are part of a “dangerous aggressive and warmongering strategy promoted by the US, NATO and the US, which includes promoting the escalation of the war in Ukraine and whose events are a serious threat to peace and the interests of the workers and peoples of the world”.

The party “demands an end to provocations in the Asia-Pacific region” and also asks the Portuguese government to disassociate itself from this action by the US representative.

“The PCP calls for the development of the struggle for peace, against militarism, the escalation of confrontation, aggression and interference by imperialism, for respect for the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the Final Act of the Helsinki Conference. , for the construction of a new international order of peace, sovereignty and social progress – in coherence with the values enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic”, concludes the note to which the Observer had access.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday, in what is the first visit by a speaker of the US House of Representatives, after the one made in 1997 by Republican Newt Gingrich.

In reaction, Beijing called the visit an “extremely dangerous” move by the United States. In a statement, China’s foreign ministry said it “strongly” condemned Pelosi’s visit, which “disregarded stern warnings” from Beijing and “sends the wrong signals” to “separatist forces seeking China’s independence.” Taiwan”. For her part, Pelosi considered that the visit to Taiwan demonstrates the “unconditional support” of the United States.
