Journalist considers that the presence of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in Brazil “will be highly manipulated”

“I have always been an admirer of his outspoken stance, although I don’t agree with his entire political stance.” Thus begins the open letter that Jamil Chade, European correspondent for the Brazilian platform UOL, addressed to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The letter published this Sunday is written in response to what the journalist considers the “fragility of Brazilian democracy” and arises from the presence of the President of the Republics at the bicentennial celebrations of Brazilian independence. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was invited by Jair Bolsonaro and will be present at the ceremonies scheduled for September 7 at the Presidential Palace.

Jamil Chade warns the Portuguese head of state: “As you know, your presence will be widely manipulated. There will be no celebration of our independence. But a kidnapping of the date by the extreme right to justify another sad chapter in our history.

“A date like 2022 should be the occasion for us to do an examination of conscience together, a search for mutual recognition of failures and successes. And, above all, so that we have the courage to chart paths to bring ‘new worlds to the world’, as you would say”, she also underlines.

The transfer of the temporary heart of D. Pedro to Brazil is also addressed by Jamil Chade: “I heard that the FAB [Força Aérea Brasileira] will bring to Brazil the heart of D.Pedro that is preserved on your land and was not burned in the fires that destroyed our collection of the past – and our dream of the future”.

At the end of the letter, the columnist asks Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to “take advantage and play a good joke on the Brazilian government”, writing that he knows that “good humor” is another characteristic of the President of the Republic.

Regarding Marcelo’s presence in Brazil, Jamil Chade calls for a decision to be made: “It is your sovereign decision to step on Brazilian lands or not at this time”. “An absence would be as present as a sea voyage of destiny that unites us. A responsible presence would be as epic as opening a new chapter in this destination that seeks a safe harbor for democracy”, reads the open letter.
