Education Minister Cardona: ‘In some places’ schools should open faster, but ‘can’t say about the local context’

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said there are “some areas where I want their schools to open faster” but “cannot talk about the local community and the local context.”

Cardona said:[W]When the president took office, 46% of our schools were full-time, less than half. By November, more than 99% of our schools will be open for full-time face-to-face instruction. That’s why we pushed for the safe reopening of our schools. Another is a native solution. Therefore, I cannot talk about the whole country. I can say that I want schools to open faster because we have vaccinations in some places, because we know what to do. But I can’t talk about local communities and local contexts. What I can tell you is that from day one, the president and I made sure reopening schools was our priority. That summer, the president prioritized inoculating educators and we were able to reopen our schools and now reopening is the baseline. We must do better for our students. They deserve it. They missed so much. Parents ask questions. And the funding is from the federal level. That’s why we need to raise the level of our education system in this country.”
