PS says new PSD leadership has “deep fanaticism for market deregulation”

The deputy general secretary of the PS, João Torres, said this Sunday that the new leadership of the PSD has “a deep fanaticism for the deregulation of the market” and accused the largest opposition party of losing the social doctrine.

“The best way to illustrate it is the set of proposals that the PSD presented to the country,” said the socialist leader, specifying: “There is one in particular that clearly reveals that the PSD is a party that today is on the side of charity and not of social justice, which is the food coupon to mitigate the inflationary crisis,” he said.

João Torres was speaking at the PS/Madeira party/rally, which takes place in the parish of Madalena do Mar, Ponta do Sol, in the west of the island, and which marks the political re-entry into the regional structure of the party, headed by Sérgio Gonçalves , after the summer holidays.

The Deputy General Secretary of the PS accused the new leadership of the PSD, headed by Luís Montenegro, of being obsessed with the market.

“It has, in effect, a deep fanaticism for the market, a deep fanaticism for the deregulation of the market, losing what is the social doctrine that naturally summons all those who are truly socialists or social democrats,” he declared.

João Torres said that, on the contrary, social justice is “absolutely decisive” for the PS, noting that the party has sought in recent years to improve salaries, pensions and the income of people in general, while ” the biggest opposition party has been on the wrong side of history.”

In his speech at the PS/Madeira Summer Party, an event attended by thousands of people, the socialist leader presented three messages from the national structure: solidarity, encouragement and commitment.

“Commitment to continue fighting for the autonomy, conditions and investments that the Republic can and should make in the Autonomous Region of Madeira”, he explained, reinforcing: “The Socialist Party, in the government of the Republic, will continue to fight for freedom, for equality, for justice, because they are the identity and the fundamental values to which we never turn our backs”, he added.

João Torres also highlighted the party’s encouragement to the leader of the insular structure, Sérgio Gonçalves, stressing that he can “count on the entire PS” for the challenges he will face, namely the 2023 regional legislative elections.

“Something new will happen if next year, from Madeira, there is a new horizon of hope,” he declared.

The PS is the largest opposition party in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, where the regional government has always been led by the PSD and, since 2019, in coalition with the CDS-PP.
