The President of the Portuguese Republic joined the United Nations this Wednesday to evoke the International Day for Afro-descendantsdefending “a more just and egalitarian Portugal” and remembering those who are still the object of racism.
In a note published on the official website, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa joins the United Nations to “commemorate the International Day for People of African Descent, greeting black among us and all those who are still subjected to racism and racial discrimination.”
“May this day remind us of the importance of uniting for a fairer and more equal Portugal for all”, defends the Portuguese head of state.
Also today, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, recalled that “millions of Afro-descendants continue to object of racism and racial discriminationvery entrenched and systemic”.
The UN General Assembly requested, in agreement with the Secretary General, the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Effective Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action to prepare a United Nations declaration on the promotion and full respect of the human rights of Afro-descendants.
The Forum, created by the UN at the beginning of the month and which is made up of 10 members who will work together with the Human Rights Council, will have as its main task the preparation of this declaration.
