Marcelo asks for Brazil “for freedom, for democracy, for justice, for a dream”

The Portuguese head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, asked this Thursday before the Brazilian Congress that Brazil continue to be a “homeland of freedom, democracy, justice, dreams, hope, unlimited reinvention, universal power.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking at a solemn session commemorating the 200 years of Brazil’s independence, at the National Congress, in Brasilia.

“We, the Portuguese, deeply love in Brazil and in you, Brazilians, that captivating, indomitable, tenaciously obstinate soul, which makes you different, which makes you unrepeatable in humanity,” he added.

The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was going to give the closing speech, but he canceled his participation in this session of Congress and did not hear the intervention of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, which turned out to be the last.

The Portuguese president made his speech essentially a thank you to the “dear brazilian brothers” for their independence and for the nation they built, and when speaking of the colonial past he mentioned “slavery, exploitation and secular discrimination”.

“Long live Brazil forever, may the fraternal friendship between Brazil and Portugal live forever, may the projection in the world of our largest community of speech, of language, which in Brazil has the strongest support, the most tireless pillar, the most eternal youth, the most perfect future. Thank you Brazil”, he declared, at the end of his speech.

Before this solemn session, the presidents of the Federal Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, and of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, as well as those responsible for the commissions set up in the two Brazilian chambers for these celebrations, and the president of the Federal Supreme Court, Luiz Fux spoke at this solemn session.
