PS “will not take advantage” of the case involving an employee of the Guard Chamber

The PS da Guarda considered this Tuesday that the conviction of a Chamber employee had “political consequences” for the president, but asks political actors for “serenity” and says that “it will not take advantage” of a justice case.

the socialist party [PS] has been following, with special concern, the political consequences derived from the judicial process that led to the conviction of a head of services of the Municipality of Guarda, for the crime of harassing a worker, an issue that, once again, put the Municipality and the city of Guarda in the mouth of the world for the worst reasons”, says in a statement the municipal political commission chaired by António Monteirinho.

The PS understands that this “is not the time to comment on the judicial process”, especially since it has not yet become definitive.

It points out, however, that “there were political consequences, from the outset, related to the actions of the Mayor of Guarda, Sérgio Costa, who, during the trial, tried, at all costs, to defend the aforementioned head of services, although, for what it is known, in a less coherent and sustained way, contrary to the image of rigor and seriousness that a mayor should have”.

The mayor’s actions cannot fail to deserve the PS’s disapproval, “even more so, because the aforementioned head of services had great political responsibilities in the municipal candidacy of the ‘Pela Guarda’ Movement. [pelo qual Sérgio Costa foi eleito]”.

The PS recalls that at Monday’s executive meeting, the PSD councilor, Carlos Chaves Monteiro, called for “the dismissal of the mayor of La Guardia and the municipal executive and the calling of mid-term elections.”

In this sense, the socialist council reaffirms “that the political stability of municipal governance was compromised by partisan quarrels and problems of asserting political egos” and the PS “must appeal to the serenity of the political actors and the responsibility of all “, remembering the commitment of loyalty that they assumed with the guardenses, at the time of their inauguration”.

We believe that this whole situation is extremely serious and that it will necessarily have political consequences, but it is the understanding of the Socialist Party that the best interests of the citizens of the Guard must be above everything and, much more, of any type of personal and partisan political strategy, or mere sign of life”, it reads.

According to the note, “nobody will count, at least for now”, on the PS “to create a climate of political instability that will not contribute at all to the welfare of the guardenses and the development of the Guard”.

PSD councilors called, on Monday, the dismissal of the executive and early elections.

At the end of the fortnightly meeting of the municipal executive, the social democrat Carlos Chaves Monteiro told journalists that in the period prior to the agenda he made a speech in which he proposed the dismissal of the executive headed by Sérgio Costa (Pela Guarda movement) and the holding of early elections under the argument that the conviction of an official, who currently works as an adviser to the president, “deprives her of any political condition to continue in office.”

The mayor, Sérgio Costa, reacted by saying that the position adopted by the PSD it is “an attempt to get in the secretariat what they couldn’t get at the ballot box.”

“This is wanting to use an employee of the Guarda City Council as a political weapon against this municipal executive,” he said.
