Montenegro regrets late discussion on teacher hiring model

The president of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, lamented this Thursday that the negotiations between the Government and the unions will only begin next week. change the teacher hiring modelwith the school year already underway.

“It is unfortunate that this is thought of in the week after the start of the school year, because it should have been thought of and carried out before the school year starts“Montenegro told reporters in Vouzela, where he is part of the “Sentir Portugal” program.

For the PSD leader, “if there is a brand that this course opening already has, it is precisely the gap in the coverage of teaching positions” and the repetition of a problem that, already last year, “was very penalizing ” for the students, many of whom did not have a teacher “all year in some subjects”.

Asked about the possibility of schools hiring teachers, Luís Montenegro recalled that “the PSD has been defending greater autonomy for schools for many years” and “greater decentralization in the area of education“.

“For many years the PS has said that neither one thing nor the other is a priority or, when it says, it does something contrary to what it says. Therefore, I can only, at this time, point out that the Government is also late and at a bad time, ”he criticized.

In his opinion, this type of negotiations should be done”to schedule the start of the school year“.

“The school year does not start first and then we will try to take measures that should have avoided the problem, which is, at the moment, the one that most affects the quality of teaching and the functioning of the educational system,” he stressed. .

The Social Democratic leader took the opportunity to challenge the Government to recover the losses that many children and young people still have in relation to the “most problematic moment of the pandemic”, in which “they had periods in which they did not have classes or were very conditioned”.

“This recovery is not done. There are thousands and thousands of students in Portugal who have not yet managed to recover what they lost on that occasion and that generates inequality”, he considered.

According to Montenegro, “a social democratic party is, by nature, a party that is always focused on equal opportunities” and “a socialist party should also do that, but unfortunately, it is often forgotten.”

The PSD leader started this Monday, in the district of Viseu, the “Feel Portugal” program, by virtue of which, for the next two years, he will spend one week a month in each of the country’s districts.
