Italy: the PS warns about the dangers of the normalization of the extreme right

The deputy general secretary of the PS, João Torres, considered this Monday that the result of the elections in Italy shows that “when the democratic right normalizes the extreme right, it ends up being led by it.”

This Monday, more than ever, we have to maintain attention and vigilance in relation to the safeguarding of democratic values”, wrote the number two of the PS on his Twitter account.

“Especially in a geopolitical context marked by uncertainty and very demanding global challenges, at different levels, yesterday’s results can only be met with apprehension and concern”, adds the Deputy Secretary General of the Socialists.

João Torres launched this alert two days after accusing the PSD of “courting a far-right party”, alluding to the call to vote for the vice president of the Assembly of the Republic proposed by Chega made by the leader of the Democratic social wing caucus , Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.

PS accuses the PSD of “courting” a far-right party

The PSD called for a vote for a vice president of the Assembly of the Republic in an extreme right-wing party. (…) We cannot let it go unnoticed, because what we saw this week in the Assembly of the Republic was a procession between the PSD and a far-right party”, accused João Torres, on Saturday, at the presentation ceremony of the Academy Jorge. Coelho, in Mangualde.

João Torres also considered that it would be “very useful for all Portuguese to understand what kind of strategy or alliance the PSD is trying to design, trying to design with a far-right party.”

According to the partial results of Sunday’s Italian parliamentary elections, the far-right and right-wing coalition — led by the FdI and which also includes Matteo Salvini’s League and Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative Forza Italia party — won between 43% of the votes.

“I will make everyone proud to be Italian.” Giorgia Meloni assumes victory in the elections

The centre-left bloc, headed by Enrico Letta’s Democratic Party, should have 26% of the votes.

The Brothers of Italy party, led by Giorgia Meloni, was founded in 2012 and has its roots in the Italian Social Movement (MSI), founded by followers of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
