The end of tuition fees to teach Portuguese abroad will not be approved by parliament, says deputy

The opinions of BE, PCP and PAN on the elimination of tuition fees for teaching Portuguese abroad were voted in favor this Tuesday in a parliamentary commission, an intention that will not go through parliament, according to socialist deputy Paulo Pisco.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities voted on Tuesday for four bills —from the Left Bloc, the Portuguese Communist Party, People-Animals-Nature and Enough— basically calling for the elimination of tuition fees for the teaching of Portuguese in the abroad and free school textbooks.

According to the commission’s socialist deputy Paulo Pisco, the opinions of BE, PCP and PAN were favorably approved, but Chega’s deserved the PS’s abstention because it contained “xenophobic elements” in its purpose.

The deputy was referring, in particular, to the recipients of this education, which is currently not only aimed at Portuguese or descendants of Portuguese, but at those who want to learn the Portuguese language, with which Chega supposedly does not agree, according to Paulo Pisco. . .

After the approval of these opinions, the elimination of bribery will be debated and voted on in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic, but Paulo Pisco said that they should not be approved, since the “commitment” of the Government is another.

“The Government’s commitment is to reduce the burdens of the Portuguese” and that will always be defined “in each State budget that is approved.”
