PCP asks the Government for a “position of defense” of the right of Palestine to be a State

The PCP condemned this Monday the “escalation of violence and provocations” perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian population and urged the Portuguese Government to assume a position “of defense” of the right of Palestine to become an independent State.

In a statement, the communist leadership “condemns the escalation of violence and provocations carried out in recent days by the Israeli government and by groups of armed Israeli settlers against the Palestinian population.”

Violence, repression, persecution and the indiscriminate destruction of Palestinian property are taking place throughout the territory, as is the expansion and construction of new Israeli settlements. Israel continues to resort to administrative detention of resistance members as it tightens its blockade of Gaza.

The PCP also expressed concern about the intention announced by the British Government to move the embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. which, if it materializes, is a “clear signal of support for Israeli policies and projects.”

The Portuguese Government must, in the opinion of the communists, “assume a clear position of defense and realization of the right of the Palestinian people to an independent State, with the 1967 borders, with its capital in East Jerusalem and the realization of the right of refugees to to return”.

The “systematic aggression and violation of international law” by Israel is only possible “with the collusion and support” of the United States of America and the European Union.
