The mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, considered this Friday that the attribution of the organization of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar “was a negotiation.”
“The choice of a country like Qatar, geographically very small, with the issue of heat and human rights that was becoming more accentuated, seemed like a bad deal for football. It was a bargain and a bad deal for the football industry.”said the mayor of Porto.
Rui Moreira, who addressed the issue outside of his participation in the inaugural ceremony of Thinking Football, in Porto, promoted by the Portuguese Professional Football League, recalled, even so, that it is a topic that “has been around since 2010”. .
“It is something that has not improved, and I am more concerned about the issue of the rights of the workers and the people who died there in the construction of the stadiums. It is something that does not dignify the world of football”, added the mayor.
Rui Moreira also said “I think Portugal can win the world title”, remembering that this will be possible thanks to the “load of extraordinary players that make up this selection”.
Regarding the Thinking Football event, the mayor of Porto considered that it is a “very important initiative for an industry that has a great impact in the country”, and considered that “it makes a lot of sense for Porto to host the event”.
