The PCP Secretary General, Paulo Raimundo, today appealed to the Portuguese to have “hope and confidence” in 2023 despite the difficult current context, arguing that “this cannot and will not continue to be like this forever.”
In a New Year’s message released today, the general secretary of the communists, elected in November, wanted to leave “a word of hope to all those who live and work in Portugal, but also to the Portuguese scattered throughout the world.” . and trust”.
Paulo Raimundo stressed that “the fears that exist are fair” since “the national situation is not good” and “the international panorama is one of great uncertainty”, with “brutal increases in the prices of everything and in particular of basic necessities such as bread, milk, rice or energy.
“So how, in this situation, can we talk about hope and confidence? Because this cannot and will not continue like this forever. Let’s turn injustice into strength to fight, ”she appealed.
For the PCP leader, “Portugal is not a poor country, it has become impoverished”, emphasizing that “when the majority builds the solution, then the solutions will respond to the interests of the majority”.
The communist general secretary also warned of the rise in interest rates, “which are being a drama for thousands of people with the brutal worsening of their mortgage loan installments.”
“Everything goes up but salaries, reforms and pensions do not follow that rise,” he lamented.
Raimundo highlighted that, at the same time that “more than two million people face poverty”, that “more than 380,000 children are in danger of social exclusion and poverty” and that “more than three million workers earn less than 1,000 euros of the base salary, there are those who are filling their coffers with profits that have not been seen for a long time”.
“Close to four billion euros, this is the result of the profits of the 13 main economic groups in the first nine months of 2022. This is the degree of inequality that exists, this is the profound injustice in everyday life”, critical.
In the opinion of Paulo Raimundo, “there are means, there are resources, there are wills and there are forces capable of moving this country and the life of each one forward.”
“We all have the capacity to open this path: the path of increased wages, reforms, guaranteeing the rights of children and their parents, making the country produce, sustainable development with a commitment to public transport, defense of the environment, guaranteeing everyone’s access to decent housing, with respect for those who work, guaranteeing and investing in the National Health Service and in Public Schools; greater tax justice and recovery of sovereignty. The path to peace, development, the path to a better life, ”he concluded.
