The PCP defended this Thursday that the censorship of the communists is done “to the government’s policy” and affirmed that more important than the departure of minister Pedro Nuno Santos is to reverse the privatization process of TAP.
“Our censorship is government policy. A policy that in the case of this public company [TAP], [é] a policy of destruction of the public service, a policy that does not solve the essential problems of the country and for us that is censorship”, defended Jorge Pires, member of the Political Commission of the Central Committee of the PCP.
The leader was speaking to journalists at the party’s headquarters, in Lisbon, and was questioned about the Iniciativa Liberal’s announcement to present a motion of no confidence in the Government, after the resignation of the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, after the controversy of TAP. “With this or that minister, the government exists, but it must govern to solve these problems,” he said.
The communist leader defended that “the political options that lead to the adoption of current practices in economic and financial groups regarding the condition of managers”, highlight “the shocking contrast with the majority of workers, who saw their compensation reduced during the troika period and which continue to be unreviewed and valued, despite the initiatives of the PCP in this regard”.
“More than knowing who the next owners will be, the national interest demands that the TAP privatization process that the Government has underway be reversed with the applause of the PSD, CDS, Chega and IL and the anticipated gluttony of the foreign transport companies that they see in this an immense opportunity for their strategy of domination of the sector”, he warned.
Without wanting to “devalue the political significance” of the events of recent days in the Government, with the resignation of the Secretary of State for Finance, Alexandra Reis, the PCP highlighted other priorities.
“What the workers and the people really want to see is the response to their most pressing problems that affect their lives, with a policy that ensures increases in wages and pensions, price controls, and improved public service, beginning with the National Health Service Administration, guaranteeing the effective right to health and a quality public school, the guarantee of the right to housing”, he stressed.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, resigned on Wednesday night to “assume political responsibility” for the case of compensation of 500,000 euros from TAP to the former Secretary of State for Finance.
This has been the third resignation of the Government in two days, after Alexandra Reis, from the Treasury portfolio, at the center of the controversy over compensation, and the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Hugo Santos Mendes, who followed Pedro’s decision Nuno Santos. .
Alexandra Reis received compensation for her early departure, in February, as executive administrator of the airline. In June she was appointed by the Government to chair the Portuguese Air Navigation (NAV) and this month she was elected Secretary of State for the Treasury.
The decision to indemnify Alexandra Reis, reported by Correio da Manhã, was criticized by the entire opposition and even questioned by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, when he said that it would be “beautiful” to do without Monto.
