Naomi Osaka will miss Wimbledon due to injury

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, former world number one, announced this Saturday that she will miss the Wimbledon tournament, the third round of the Grand Slam, for the second consecutive year, due to a heel injury.

“My heel hasn’t healed yet so see you next time,” Naomi Osaka wrote on her official Twitter page, along with a photograph on a grass pitch, the floor used at Wimbledon.

The 24-year-old tennis player had already missed the 2021 British tournament, but due to mental health problems, an issue publicly acknowledged by the Japanese player.

At Wimbledon, the most Osaka did was reach the third round, in 2017 and 2018.

The Japanese tennis player has four victories in ‘Grand Slam’ tournaments, but all of them on hard surfaces (twice at the Australian Open and twice at the United States Open).

The Canadian Eugénie Bouchard, a finalist in 2014, the year in which she reached her best position in the WTA ranking (fifth place), will not be at the All England Club either.

The 28-year-old has opted out due to the WTA’s (and also the ATP’s) decision to exclude the British tournament from this year’s points rankings, due to the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian entrants.

Wimbledon organizers pushed for this ban due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Belarus’s support for the Russian government.

The tournament will take place from June 27 to July 10.
