The 25km open water event will leave the World Swimming Championships program at the 2023 edition in Fukuoka, Japan, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) announced on Friday.
FINA assumes that “the decision is not easy”, but that “I could not ignore the low number of participants in this event in the last two World Cups, as well as the costs that this entails for the local organizing committees”.
At the World Championships in Budapest, 40 swimmers (25 men and 15 women) competed in the 25 km events.
Open water swimming continues to progress and FINA will continue to explore new opportunities for the 25km event. In fact, FINA is currently working on a new concept for long open water events.
