The University of North Texas (UNT) student government is calling to suspend student groups accused of making “transphobic posts” to “protect the mental, emotional and physical health of the transgender community”.
A resolution titled “Trans Existence Is Not a Debate” was passed to UNT in response to an incident at Texas Young Conservatives by Jeff Younger, a father who reportedly lost custody of his son due to his son’s allegations and trans status. .
Younger also described minors’ gender reassignment as “child abuse” and “mutilation,” and supported Governor Abbott in instructing the Texas Department of Family and Welfare to investigate the state’s youth transition process.
In March, UNT protesters were shot down singing “Fuck you fascist” in response to Younger’s presence on campus.
Today, the UNT Student Government Association mandates that any student group accused of making transphobic comments or posts be “immediately suspended to protect the mental, emotional and physical health of UNT trans students.”
“Transphobic expressions, actions and rhetoric used on campus directly threaten the physical health and lives of UNT students and cause significant and direct harm and suffering to the trans community on campus,” the resolution said.
Video footage obtained by Campus Reform shows a supposed member of the UNT student government admitting that the university’s decision to disband the student group, the Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT), has been made.
“I passed a law that would effectively destroy YCT,” the student said in the video.
However, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) believes the decision is an attempt to circumvent the First Amendment.
“Students are free to speak out against Younger’s activity or arguments. But the SGA decision is far from a First Amendment-affiliated government agency,” he said.
Of course, the university will have an obligation to combat transphobic behavior that meets legal definitions of harassment or discrimination, but many of what some might call “transphobic” also protect speech that doesn’t and may not break the law. punished,” he added. FIRE.
