At least 84 people have died in Pernambuco due to heavy rains that have hit the northeastern state of Brazil since early last week. Between Friday and Sunday, 79 people lost their lives.
The governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, said that it is impossible to say how many people are missing, reveals CNN Brazil. At least 4,000 people were left homeless.

Given the gravity of the situation, 14 municipalities have already declared a state of emergency: Recife, Olinda, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, São José da Coroa Grande, Moreno, Nazaré, Macaparana, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, São Vicente Ferrer, Paudalho, Paulista, Goiana, Timbauba and Camaragibe.
Despite efforts to facilitate rescue operations, weather forecasts point to the continuation of heavy rains this Monday in northeastern Brazil.
