The city of Faro has, since this Wednesday, a network of bicycles for shared use under a pilot project that should last a year and a halfannounced the mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau.
The network will have 75 bicycles, 25 of them electric, which can be used by people over 18 years of age and will be available at 20 ‘hotspots’ in the center of Faroin the Gambelas area, where one of the centers of the University of the Algarve is located, and in Praia de Faro.
During the project’s launch ceremony, next to the Arco da Vila, where one of the ‘hotspots’ for parking bicycles is located, Rogério Bacalhau stressed that this is one more step in the municipality’s mobility strategy, after the creation of bike paths in two areas of the city and access to Praia de Faro.
“This project represents an investment of almost 200,000 euros that will be worked on in this concession for a year and a half to understand how people are going to react, and then make a new tender,” he said.
Bicycles must be parked in one of the areas marked on the map as the places delimited to the effect and, in otherwise, the user incurs fines charged to the associated payment method.
Asked if there is an intention to create bike paths in the center of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau said that “within the city it is very difficult to make bike paths”, because the streets are narrow and areas are being created to limit the speed of the cars.
