The information office of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia announced that scientists from the Institute of Chemical Solutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed a new method for obtaining the local anesthetic lidocaine.
The office said in a statement that this method allows the crystal structure of the substance to be determined in advance, resulting in a type of medication that can be used to suppress cough.
The new method is based on the use of materials that are in an intermediate state between liquid and gas – supercritical fluids (SCF). In this case, the materials have low viscosity and relatively high melting capacity.
According to the researchers, the use of SCF technology in the pharmaceutical industry opens up new avenues for the creation of drugs and medicines with high purity and the ability to control grain size, on which bioavailability and rate depend. of dissolution in the body.
“Scientists have designed a method for synthesizing lidocaine with a predefined crystal structure, the control of which is essential for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The new method is based on the use of supercritical fluid technology and allows the lidocaine form to be used to suppress cough, ”it said.
According to the researchers, the new lidocaine is characterized by a high level of purity, low cost and relatively easy production. This method would be an environmental alternative to the methods currently in use, which rely on the use of organic solvents.
It should be noted that the entire study was published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids.
