Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean Sea feel “forgotten”, “neglected” Y “aggrieved”, alleging that it is not No care or support has been given to these citizens since the war in Ukraine began. They accuse the European authorities and governments of “unequal treatment” and even of “structural racism” against the Ukrainian refugees. And they leave a warning: if it was difficult to help migrants before, the consequences of the war —such as the reduction in donations and the rise in fuel prices— have worsened the situation. Rescue operations may even be at stake.
Despite the criticism, the European Commission, contacted by the Observer, denies the charges. A source in Brussels guarantees that what happens in the Mediterranean Sea “remains a priority” and that support is being given to migrants, despite the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. In fact, the community executive recently approved a series of new measures regarding asylum for migrants.
