Do speeding tickets end on July 6?

European legislation will oblige all new vehicles, sold on or after July 6to be equipped with Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA), smart speed assistant. The measure covers passenger cars and commercial vehiclesintended to prevent drivers from exceeding speed limits and exposing themselves to fines.

There are already some vehicles on the market equipped with ISA as standard, but, according to the legislation still in force, this system is turned off until the driver puts it into operation. As of the next day 6, the ISA will be activated as soon as the driver starts the vehicleallowing, however, to turn off, if that is the will of the person behind the wheel.

This default activation, which for the time being can still be deactivated, is the first step towards an automatic system that the European Union intends to make compulsory and that only pressure from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) prevented it from happening. And this position of ACEA will continue, since the impossibility of exceeding the speed limits would make the most powerful vehicles on the market, most of them German, no longer of interest. Brussels, through the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), states that the ISA can reduce collisions by 30% and traffic deaths by 20%if it is in use.

ISA identifies the maximum speed allowed in each place, with the help of the camera that “reads” the traffic signs, as well as through GPS positioning, a system that also accurately calculates the speed at which the vehicle is moving. Every time the limit is exceeded, ISA restricts engine performance to respect the limit. But in an emergency situation, the system allows you to momentarily exceed the authorized speed in the area, to carry out a maneuver or complete an overtaking.
