Environmental organizations commit to act against the inclusion of nuclear and gas in ‘green energy’

International environmental organizations Greenpeace and WWF have pledged to take action against the inclusion of natural gas and nuclear power on the EU’s list of sustainable investments, after MEPs failed to veto the move on Wednesday.

In a statement, Greenpeace announced that will take legal action against the European Commission on the inclusion of fossil gas and nuclear energy in the list of sustainable investments of the European Union (EU), the taxonomy, after the European Parliament did not get enough votes on Wednesday to block the controversial plan of the Commission.

Before legal action can take place, Greenpeace will submit a formal request for an internal review of the taxonomy to the European Commission and, if the result is negative, will file a complaint with the EU Court of Justice.

For its part, WWF announced that, together with other environmental organizations, “it will explore all possible avenues of future action to put an end to this greenwashing and protect the credibility of the entire EU taxonomy“.

The European Parliament on Wednesday validated the classification of nuclear and gas as economically sustainable energy sources from an environmental point of view, by rejecting a motion that opposed the controversial proposal of the European Commission.
