A scientist has discovered places in the world that are in danger of becoming deserts

According to Russian scientist Sergey Semyonov, scientific director of the World Climate Institute, desert areas and water shortages could emerge if humanity continues to be irresponsible for climate.

In an interview with the newspaper “Izvestia”, the Russian climatologist states that areas at risk of desertification are in North Africa, South America and the southwestern United States.

“The climate of the future – by the end of the century, will depend on how we deal with the climate system,” he said. “If greenhouse gases continue to be released into the atmosphere and there are no energy savings, that is a climate situation. in the world.”

According to him, the most favorable scenario is the conversion of humanity to the use of renewable energy, the provision of fuel and the strengthening of international cooperation in this field.

“If we take the irresponsible scenario, that is, if we continue to burn organic fossil fuels, oil, coal and gas in large quantities and continue to enrich the environment with greenhouse gases, the regions will emerge at the same rate as now. Gradual water shortages For example, all countries in the Mediterranean basin, such as North Africa, the Middle and Near East, are where these regions will suffer from water shortages. In some cases, the steppes will become deserts.

He added that parts of southern Russia may also be at risk, such as the Stavropol, Krasnodar and Kalmyka regions, where Russia is dependent on food production.

“If we follow the scenario of moderate human impact on global climate, these processes will gradually evolve. But it’s not just a feature of the regions I’ve mentioned, it’s a feature of parts of South America and the southwestern United States, but those are actually more detailed things. And complexity. ”
