The recycling rate in Porto exceeded 40% in the first half of the year, equivalent to 76.39 kilos of recycled waste per inhabitant, the municipality revealed on Tuesday, adding that the selective collection of waste and organics has grown.
In a statement, the Porto City Council said that the municipality reached, in the first six months, a recycling rate of 41.53%, “exceeding the closing values of 2021”, which stood at 39.26%, and “positioning itself well above the goal set in the Strategic Plan for Urban Solid Waste (PERSU 2020), of 31%.
The numbers are even more expressive if the average value per person is considered, with an increase of 10% compared to 2021 (69 kilograms per inhabitant per year), which allows, only in this period, to reach 76.39 kilograms per inhabitant per year, far exceeding. the goal of 61 kilograms per inhabitant per year”, highlights the municipality.
The data also reveal that in these first six months of 2022 there has been an “expressive” growth in the selective collection of organics, “of more than 80%, with a collection of more than 4,600 tons”, which represents about 30 % of total waste collected separately.
Already in selective waste collection (paper, packaging and glass), the increase was “significant”having been set at 22.72%.
Both in the selective collection of organics and waste, the values achieved were the “highest in the last seven years”, highlights the municipality.
The “combination of the efforts of the people of Porto” and the “work carried out by Porto Ambiente (municipal company) allowed avoid the emission of some 7,276 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, “a vital contribution to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality in the city”.
The indicators for the first half of the year follow the growth trajectory of recent years, with the city exceeding the established goals, as a result of greater awareness of the people, but also of Porto Ambiente’s commitment to best practices”, considers the municipality, recalling that this semester was also marked by the expansion of door-to-door selective waste collection to more than 1,100 families in the Antas area.
The Chamber of Porto also underlines that the city “consolidates its position as a Landfill 0 city, avoiding only 0.01% of the total waste produced for this destination”.
