Tesla’s Elon Musk recently warned customers in Texas not to charge their electric vehicles during rush hour to avoid overloading the state’s power grid amid the ongoing heatwave. The warning sent to Tesla vehicles in the state warns owners not to charge their vehicles until the afternoon and evening.
The Verge reports that Tesla is asking customers in Texas not to charge their electric vehicles during rush hour to avoid further strain on the Texas power grid as the state faces an ongoing heatwave. Texas grid operator, the Texas Electricity Reliability Council (ERCOT), recently urged residents to conserve electricity during heat waves when systems operate under extreme conditions.
Tesla has issued a warning to customer vehicle displays saying they should avoid charging their vehicles between 3 pm and 8 pm due to the extreme heat. The warning reads: “A heatwave in Texas is expected to affect the grid in the coming days. The grid operator recommends avoiding charging during peak hours between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., if possible, to aid the state’s demand management efforts.”

ERCOT has effectively asked Texans not to turn on large devices between 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The aim is to reduce the load on the power grid to prevent power outages. Current triple-digit temperatures are putting pressure on electrical systems as customers use air conditioners and other high-power cooling devices more frequently.
Earlier this month, ERCOT also warned Texas electricity consumers about conserving energy, stating that wind power will not be enough to keep the grid reliable at peak loads. Texas is the number one producer of wind power in the US, but windmill power is becoming unreliable due to the current heat wave.
